Double-Chin Liposuction at a Glance
-
Overview
Double-chin liposuction — also called submental liposuction — is a surgical procedure that permanently removes stubborn fat deposits under the chin and along the jawline. By targeting and eliminating these fat cells, it creates a more defined neck and a sharper, more youthful facial profile.
-
Recovery
Swelling and bruising are expected and subside over several weeks. A compression garment is typically worn for a few days to a week to aid in healing. Most patients return to work and social activities within one to two weeks, with full recovery over a few months.
-
Results
The results are long-lasting and become fully visible as the swelling subsides over several months. Once the fat cells are removed, they do not return — providing a permanent and transformative improvement to your facial contour.

How Chin Liposuction Works
The Surgical Process
Double-chin liposuction is an outpatient procedure that can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation or under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes a few small, well-placed incisions and inserts a thin cannula to gently suction out excess fatty tissue. The procedure is precise and allows the surgeon to carefully sculpt the jawline and neck to achieve the desired contour.
A Permanent Solution for a Common Concern
Unlike non-surgical fat reduction methods, liposuction permanently removes fat cells from the body. While it is not a weight-loss procedure, it provides a powerful and lasting solution for localized fat deposits. The results are permanent as long as a stable weight is maintained — the body will not produce new fat cells in the treated area.
Surgeon's Notes
When liposuction is enough — and when a neck lift is needed
The trickiest part of consulting on submental contouring is honestly assessing skin elasticity. Patients in their 20s, 30s, and 40s with good skin tone typically do beautifully with chin liposuction alone — the skin retracts smoothly to the new contour. Patients in their 50s and 60s, or anyone who has lost significant weight, often need more than fat removal. Without enough skin elasticity, removing the fat leaves loose skin draping under the jaw — a worse cosmetic result than the original double chin. For those patients, the right answer is a neck lift, not liposuction. Part of my job is recognizing the difference and recommending the procedure that will actually deliver what they're hoping for.
