Small Vein Treatment at a Glance
-
Overview
Small Vein Treatment uses advanced laser technology — the Cutera Excel V+ — to offer a non-surgical solution for facial and leg veins. The laser targets the blood within the vessel, causing it to coagulate and be naturally reabsorbed by the body, leaving behind clearer skin.
-
Recovery
As a non-invasive procedure, there is minimal to no downtime. Patients may experience temporary redness or mild swelling at the treatment site, which typically subsides within 24–48 hours. Most normal activities resume immediately.
-
Results
Initial results may be visible within a few weeks, but the full outcome becomes apparent over several months as the treated veins are absorbed by the body. For optimal results, a series of one to two treatments is often recommended.

How the Laser Works to Clear Your Skin
How the Cutera Excel V+ Works
Our Small Vein Treatment uses the Cutera Excel V+, a state-of-the-art laser system that delivers precise pulses of light energy. This energy is absorbed by the hemoglobin within the blood in the targeted veins. The process causes the blood to coagulate and the vessel walls to collapse. The treated vessel is then safely and naturally reabsorbed by your body, and blood flow is redirected to healthier veins deeper beneath the skin.
A Comfortable, Quick Experience
A common question is, “Does it hurt?” While sensations vary from person to person, most patients describe a brief stinging feeling as the laser energy is delivered. The sensation typically subsides quickly. No anesthesia is required, but a topical numbing cream can be applied beforehand for your comfort. The treatment itself is relatively quick — sessions often last only 15–30 minutes depending on the number of veins being addressed.
Surgeon's Notes
Setting expectations on leg veins specifically
Facial spider veins respond beautifully to the Excel V+ — most patients see real improvement after one session. Leg veins are different. They sit deeper, they're under more pressure from gravity, and they often have an underlying venous insufficiency that the laser alone can't address. When patients come in for leg vein treatment, I'm honest about what we can and can't do: we can clear the visible cosmetic veins, but we can't stop new ones from forming if the underlying circulation issues aren't being managed. For patients with extensive leg veins, I sometimes recommend a vascular consult first.
