What Preservé Is — and What It Isn’t

Preservé is a technique, not a product you choose instead of an implant. It describes how the surgeon creates the space the implant sits in. The implants used at our practice under this technique are Motiva® SmoothSilk® implants, which received FDA approval for breast augmentation in the United States in September 2024.

That distinction matters when you are researching, because it is easy to find pages online that blur it. Techniques are not FDA-approved — devices are. What you should be asking about is which implant is being placed, and what approach your surgeon is using to place it.

The Three Steps

Motiva describes the procedure in three stages. After the area is numbed, the surgeon makes an incision in the inframammary fold — the crease beneath the breast — and uses the Motiva® Channel Separator to create a tunnel by separating tissue rather than cutting it. Next, the Motiva® Inflatable Balloon is inserted and gradually expanded, pushing the tissue structures aside to form a pocket matched to the size of the implant. Finally, the implant is placed into that pocket.

The intent throughout is conservation: the technique is designed to avoid disrupting the pectoralis major muscle and to preserve the breast’s own tissue, including nipple sensation.

Both of Our Surgeons Offer It

Dr. Jane Namkung and Dr. Richard Green are both listed as Preservé providers in Motiva’s United States surgeon locator. Motiva launched the technique in the US in March 2026 and trains and certifies surgeons directly.

We will be candid about one thing. Preservé is a new technique in the United States, and the published clinical outcome data most often cited for it was generated outside the US using a next-generation Motiva implant that is not yet approved here. That does not make the technique unsound — the instruments are registered with the FDA and are used with FDA-approved implants — but it does mean you should be skeptical of any practice quoting you precise complication rates or recovery guarantees for Preservé in the US. We would rather tell you what we know and what we don’t than repeat numbers that were measured under different conditions.

Conventional breast augmentation is a well-established procedure with decades of outcome data, and for some patients and some anatomy it remains the better choice.
