Your Ears, Your Confidence

Creating Balance and Harmony with Otoplasty

Safely reshape or reposition prominent or asymmetrical ears — a procedure that's often life-changing for children, and equally meaningful for adults.

Otoplasty at a Glance

  • Overview

Otoplasty, or ear surgery, is a cosmetic procedure that corrects prominent, asymmetrical, or misshapen ears. By reshaping the cartilage and repositioning the ears closer to the head, it creates a more balanced and natural-looking appearance that harmonizes with the facial features.

  • Recovery

A soft headwrap or dressing is worn for several days to support the ears' new position. Swelling and bruising are common and subside over a few weeks. Most patients — including children — can return to school or work within a week, with a full return to activities in a few weeks.

  • Results

Results are immediate, permanent, and often life-changing — especially for children who have been teased about their ears. The procedure provides a more natural contour and improved symmetry, and significantly boosts self-confidence.

Otoplasty

Am I a Good Candidate?

Otoplasty is a safe and effective procedure for both children and adults who are self-conscious about the appearance of their ears. For children, the ideal age is between 4 and 14 — the ear cartilage is more pliable and healing is faster. The procedure is also an excellent option for adults who have lived with prominent or misshapen ears for years and are ready to make a change. The most important factor is a patient who is motivated and has realistic expectations. We will listen to your concerns and assess your ear anatomy to create a plan that achieves a natural, aesthetically pleasing result.

What Do Scars Look Like?

Our surgeons place the otoplasty incision in a very inconspicuous location — the natural crease behind the ear. This strategic placement ensures the resulting scar is minimal and well-hidden, even when looking directly at the ear from the side. While all surgical procedures leave a scar, the otoplasty scar is rarely a concern for patients. With proper care and sun protection, it continues to fade over time and becomes virtually unnoticeable.

More Details About Otoplasty

The Surgical Process

The Surgical Process

Otoplasty is an outpatient procedure that can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation for adults, or under general anesthesia for children. The surgeon makes a small incision in the natural fold behind the ear to access the cartilage, then carefully reshapes the cartilage using a variety of techniques and uses internal sutures to pin the ear closer to the head. The method is designed to create a long-lasting, natural-looking result.

The Emotional Benefits of Ear Surgery

While otoplasty is a cosmetic procedure, its benefits often extend far beyond aesthetics. For children frequently teased about their ears, it can be a life-changing procedure that significantly boosts confidence and helps avoid the social and emotional distress associated with their appearance. For adults, it is a chance to finally feel comfortable and confident in their own skin after years of self-consciousness.

Surgeon's Notes

Jane Namkung, MD

Why earlier (in childhood) is usually better

Otoplasty is one of the few cosmetic procedures I actively encourage for children, in the right age window. Children between 4 and 14 with prominent ears often deal with teasing that meaningfully affects their social and emotional development, and the surgery is technically simpler at that age — the cartilage is more pliable, healing is faster, and the result holds beautifully through teenage years and into adulthood. Adults benefit too, and we perform plenty of adult otoplasties, but parents who notice their child is self-conscious about their ears should know that this is one of the easier procedures to do well and one of the highest-impact for confidence. The teasing-stops-immediately effect is real.

Otoplasty Recovery & Results Timeline

Please remember this is just a guide for Otoplasty recovery. Every individual and recovery is unique. Your surgeon will provide you with personalized instructions and recovery times after your procedure.

1

Day 1 – 3

Your ears will be bandaged with a soft dressing or headwrap. You will experience some discomfort, swelling, and bruising, which can be managed with pain medication.

2

1 Week

The initial headwrap is removed, and a lighter, more discreet headband will be worn — particularly at night — to support the ears' new position. You can return to school or work.

3

2 – 3 Weeks

Most of the swelling and bruising will have resolved. You can begin to see the final results. Avoid any activity that could put stress on the ears.

4

1 – 2 Months

You can gradually return to all normal activities, including contact sports. Your ears will be fully healed, and the final contour and position are stable.
