Create a Stronger, More Defined Profile

A Permanent Solution for Facial Harmony

Enhance your facial balance and jawline definition with a customized chin implant — a permanent alternative to filler that complements your other features.

Chin Augmentation at a Glance

  • Overview

Chin augmentation is a surgical procedure designed to improve the size and projection of a 'weak' or receding chin. By placing a biocompatible implant on the jawbone, it creates a more defined jawline and brings the chin into better proportion with the rest of the facial features.

  • Recovery

Swelling and bruising are expected and gradually subside over several weeks. Most patients return to work and social activities within one to two weeks. Full recovery, with final results apparent, takes a few months.

  • Results

Results are permanent and visible immediately, though they continue to improve as swelling subsides. The procedure provides a more defined jawline, a balanced profile, and a more harmonious overall appearance.

Chin Augmentation

Am I a Good Candidate?

You are an excellent candidate for chin augmentation if you are bothered by a chin that lacks projection or definition. A chin that is too small can make your nose appear larger, create the illusion of a double chin, and throw off your overall facial balance. Chin augmentation is often performed in combination with rhinoplasty to create a balanced profile, or with a neck lift for patients addressing multiple lower-face concerns. We will assess your facial structure and listen to your goals to determine if this is the right step for you.

What Do Scars Look Like?

Chin augmentation incisions are carefully planned to be inconspicuous. Our surgeons can place the incision either inside the mouth (where no external scar is visible) or in the natural crease under the chin. If made under the chin, the resulting scar is small, well-hidden, and fades over time to become virtually unnoticeable.

More Details About Chin Augmentation

The Surgical Process

The Surgical Process

Chin augmentation is an outpatient procedure that can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation or under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes a small incision to create a pocket directly on the chin bone. A biocompatible implant — customized to fit your facial structure — is inserted, carefully positioned, and secured with sutures or small screws. The incision is closed with dissolvable sutures.

A Permanent Solution for Facial Balance

Unlike temporary fillers, a chin implant provides a permanent result. The implant is made of a safe, inert material designed to be well-tolerated by the body. Once secured and healed, it becomes a permanent part of your facial structure, providing a lasting improvement to your profile and overall facial harmony.

Surgeon's Notes

Jane Namkung, MD

Why chin augmentation often gets paired with a rhinoplasty

Patients often come in for rhinoplasty wanting a smaller nose, and they're right that their nose bothers them. But sometimes the nose looks bigger than it is because the chin is set back, throwing the whole profile out of balance. A modest chin augmentation alongside a more conservative rhinoplasty rebalances the profile in a way that operating on the nose alone cannot. About one in three of my rhinoplasty consultations end with us discussing whether a small chin implant would let me do less to the nose while creating a better overall result. The patients who choose the combined approach almost always say afterward it was the right call — even though they came in thinking only the nose was the problem.
