Reshape Your Profile with Rhinoplasty

Creating Balance and Harmony for Your Face

Enhance the size, shape, and proportion of your nose for a more balanced, harmonious appearance — and, when needed, improved breathing.

Rhinoplasty at a Glance

  • Overview

Rhinoplasty, or a nose job, is a surgical procedure designed to improve the appearance of the nose and its proportion to the rest of the face. It can address a dorsal hump, a bulbous tip, wide nostrils, or asymmetry — and can also correct breathing issues caused by a deviated septum.

  • Recovery

Swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes are common and gradually subside over several weeks. A cast or splint is typically worn for about one week. Most patients return to work and light activities within one to two weeks, but a full recovery takes several months.

  • Results

Final results are permanent and become fully visible over a period of up to a year as residual swelling completely resolves. The procedure provides a more harmonious facial profile and, in many cases, significantly improves breathing function.

Rhinoplasty

Am I a Good Candidate?

You are an excellent candidate for rhinoplasty if you are bothered by the size, shape, or proportion of your nose and have a clear, realistic idea of your desired outcome. The procedure is popular with individuals who have a dorsal hump, a drooping or asymmetrical tip, or nostrils that are too wide. It is also an ideal solution for those who have a deviated septum or other structural issues that make breathing difficult. We recommend that a patient's facial growth is complete before considering rhinoplasty — typically after age 16 for women and 18 for men. During your consultation, we will listen to your aesthetic goals and create a plan to help you achieve a more balanced, confident profile. Sometimes chin augmentation is recommended in conjunction to address facial balancing on profile.

What Do Scars Look Like?

Rhinoplasty incisions are carefully planned to be as inconspicuous as possible. With an "open rhinoplasty," a very small incision is made across the columella — the narrow strip of tissue that separates the nostrils. The scar is minimal and fades over time, becoming virtually imperceptible. With a "closed" approach, all incisions are placed inside the nostrils and no external scar is visible at all. The choice depends on your specific anatomy and goals.

The Surgical Process

The Surgical Process

Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia. Our surgeons use a variety of techniques to achieve your desired result. With an open approach, an incision is made on the underside of the nose to lift the skin and provide the surgeon with a clearer view of the underlying nasal structures.

A Blend of Aesthetics and Function

A rhinoplasty is not just about making your nose look better — it’s also about making sure it functions properly. Every cosmetic rhinoplasty I perform also takes nasal breathing into consideration. For patients with a deviated septum, the rhinoplasty can be combined with a septoplasty to straighten the cartilage and bone, which can dramatically improve breathing. As a facial plastic surgeon, I am trained to provide both functional improvements to breathing and the aesthetic refinements that meet your cosmetic goals.

Surgeon's Notes

Jane Namkung, MD

Why I rarely treat a nose without also planning the chin

The nose doesn't exist in isolation — it sits in a relationship with the chin, the cheeks, and the forehead. Patients often come to me wanting to reduce a dorsal hump, and they're entirely right that it bothers them. But sometimes the hump looks bigger than it is because the chin is set back, and what would actually rebalance the profile is a small chin augmentation alongside a more modest nasal change. Operating on the nose alone in that situation gives a technically beautiful result that still doesn't quite look right. Part of every rhinoplasty consultation I do includes profile analysis — and sometimes the answer is 'do less to the nose, and address the chin too.'

Rhinoplasty Recovery & Results Timeline

Please remember this is just a guide for Rhinoplasty recovery. Every individual and recovery is unique. Your surgeon will provide you with personalized instructions and recovery times after your procedure.

1

Day 1 – 7

You will have a splint or cast on your nose and a bandage underneath to catch any drainage. Swelling and bruising will be most prominent during this time.

2

1 – 2 Weeks

The splint and any sutures will be removed. Most of the bruising will have resolved, and you can return to work and light, non-strenuous activities.

3

1 – 6 Months

The majority of the swelling will have subsided, and you will start to see the final shape of your nose.

4

6 Months – 1 Year

All residual swelling will have completely resolved, and the final results of your rhinoplasty will be fully apparent and stable.
